CHICAGO, Ill., (KBSI) – An Illinois State Police squad car was damaged early Tuesday when it was sideswiped by a vehicle that failed to move over during a traffic stop on Interstate 94, the agency said.
Police reported that around 1:25 a.m. on Nov. 25, a trooper was conducting a traffic stop on the right shoulder of southbound I-94 near the 63rd Street exit with emergency lights activated. A black SUV exiting the interstate did not move over and struck the rear passenger side of the squad car. The trooper was inside the vehicle at the time but was not injured. The SUV fled the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident marks the 14th Move Over Law–related crash involving ISP in 2025.
In 2024, the agency recorded 27 Move Over crashes, resulting in 12 trooper injuries and one death. In 2023, ISP reported 21 such crashes, with seven troopers injured.
ISP reminded motorists that Illinois’ Move Over Law — known as Scott’s Law — requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency or hazard-lighted vehicles stopped on the roadside.
Violations carry a minimum fine of $250 and up to $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury, the driver’s license may be suspended for six months to two years.
