CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) — Police are investigating three separate reports of shots fired Saturday night in Carbondale that resulted in damage to several homes but no reported injuries.
According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers were first dispatched at approximately 7:16 p.m. to the 500 block of South Beverage Street after receiving reports of multiple gunshots. Officers canvassed the area and later located several shell casings.
At about 10:30 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of North Bridge Street for another report of gunfire. Police found multiple bullet strikes to a residence and recovered spent shell casings just north of the home. The residence was unoccupied at the time.
While officers were investigating the earlier incidents, they were dispatched again around 1:05 a.m. Sunday to the 500 block of South Beverage Street after multiple callers reported hearing gunfire. During a canvass, officers determined that three residences had been struck by gunfire.
Carbondale police detectives responded to investigate the shootings. During the investigation, officers learned a 14-year-old boy had been captured on surveillance video stealing 9mm ammunition from a local business. Evidence recovered from the shooting scenes was consistent with the stolen ammunition, police said.
The investigation led to the identification of two 14-year-old boys as suspects in all three incidents. Both were taken into custody on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm. One of the juveniles also was charged with retail theft.
Police said the residence struck in the 600 block of North Bridge Street and one of the homes hit in the 500 block of South Beverage Street were connected to individuals with whom the juveniles had previously been involved in a dispute over stolen property.
Both juveniles were released to their guardians pending a court hearing. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
In accordance with the Illinois Juvenile Justice Act, the names of the juveniles are not being released. The investigation remains ongoing.
