CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Two Cape Girardeau men were arrested early New Year’s Day after police responded to reports of shots fired in a residential neighborhood.

Officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department were dispatched to the 400 block of South Ellis Street at about 12:02 a.m. Jan. 1 after receiving reports of gunfire. While responding, officers reported hearing additional shots coming from the area.

When officers arrived, they observed a person briefly open and then shut the front door of a residence after noticing law enforcement. Officers made contact at the home and found several individuals inside.

Police detained everyone inside the residence and identified one suspect as Jeramiah Campbell, 25, of Cape Girardeau. Campbell told officers he had a firearm in a bag and admitted to firing the weapon outside the residence, police said.

Another individual, Kuron Kershaw, 20, of Cape Girardeau, also told officers he fired a weapon outside the home. Kershaw said the firearm was inside the residence and belonged to his mother, according to police.

No injuries or property damage were reported. Two firearms were seized during the investigation.

Campbell and Kershaw were taken into custody and later charged through the Cape Girardeau County Prosecutor’s Office with unlawful discharge of a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor. Both were issued $10,000 cash or surety bonds.

Police noted that the charges are accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
