SIKESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — Two people were arrested following an animal cruelty investigation involving a deceased dog found abandoned near Cinema Drive, according to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Sikeston DPS said it worked jointly with PAWS (Pet and Animal Welfare Services) after a canine was found dead Dec. 13 near Cinema Drive. Investigators reviewed surveillance video and conducted follow-up inquiries, which led to the identification of two Sikeston residents as suspects.

On Dec. 17, officers contacted individuals at a residence on Dorothy Street connected to the investigation. Two people were arrested and charged with animal abuse and animal neglect.

Investigators determined the dog was severely emaciated and had been deprived of adequate shelter, food, water and necessary medical care. Authorities said evidence showed the animal was abandoned overnight in freezing temperatures. Surveillance footage and witness statements linked the dog to the residence under investigation.

Officials reminded pet owners of the importance of providing animals with proper shelter from cold weather, access to unfrozen water, adequate nutrition and appropriate medical care during winter months. Animals kept outdoors must have protection from wind, moisture and freezing temperatures.

Suspected cases of animal neglect or abuse should be reported to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety at 573-471-4711 or to PAWS.
