Two dogs killed in Murphysboro house fire

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (KBSI)- The Murphysboro Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire on March 22, 2024.
With an aggressive fire attack, the fire was contained to a bedroom and hallway.
The resident escaped the structure prior to Fire Department arrival but did sustain moderate burn injuries that were initially treated by Jackson County Ambulance Service, and he was subsequently transported to the hospital for further treatment.
There were also several dogs in the residence. Most of them escaped with the occupant. Firefighters began a search for two missing dogs and located them inside the structure.
Life-saving measures were started immediately on the dogs but tragically were not successful.
The Fire Department was assisted in these resuscitation efforts by Dr. Kay Creese and other personnel from St. Francis Care Animal Shelter.
The fire is being investigated by the Murphysboro Fire Department Investigations Division.
