JOHNSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — UPDATE: Illinois State Police confirm that two separate fatal crashes have shut down Interstate 24 just south of the I-57 split in Johnson County.
I-24 eastbound remains closed, and traffic is being diverted around the scene via I-57 southbound to Illinois Route 146.
Authorities say one of the earlier crashes near the Illinois 37 overpass has been cleared. However, a second crash involving a tractor-trailer that struck the overpass at mile marker 3 continues to block the interstate.
ISP reports that both crashes resulted in fatalities. The roadway is expected to remain closed until cleanup and investigations are complete.
