University of Mississippi confirms two student deaths; kratom found in both investigations

OXFORD, Miss., (KBSI) — The University of Mississippi and local law enforcement are addressing misinformation circulating about the recent deaths of two college-aged individuals.

The university said the coroner’s office has confirmed two student deaths. University Police are not aware of any additional student deaths and remain in contact with local and state law enforcement.

The Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit said law enforcement is conducting two separate death investigations. Authorities said there is currently no confirmed evidence indicating the deaths are connected.

Investigators said packaged kratom purchased from a retail store was found during both investigations. However, authorities said there is no confirmed information indicating kratom or any other substance contributed to either death.

Out of caution, officials are encouraging people to avoid kratom and other medications or substances that were not prescribed to them or obtained from a trusted, regulated source.

Local, state and federal agencies are working together as the investigations continue. Authorities are asking the public not to speculate about the circumstances or causes of the deaths and to rely on information released through official sources.

Officials also noted that free Narcan is available through vending machines on campus and at the downtown parking garage in Oxford. Narcan can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and is available to the community at no charge.
