WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn., (KBSI) — Authorities allege that Khristi Dawn Cunningham fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy and fired at responding officers during a series of 9-1-1 calls early Jan. 30.
According to an affidavit, Cunningham used the Weakley County 9-1-1 system at about 2:52 a.m. to report “shots fired” while discharging a pistol at or near the Days Inn, located at 800 University St. in Martin.
Investigators said Cunningham then drove to the parking lot of Pocket’s convenience store, at 821 University St., and positioned herself to observe officers responding to the Days Inn. During that time, she continued calling 9-1-1 and hanging up. Law enforcement used GPS data from Cunningham’s cellphone, which placed her at or near the convenience store, authorities said.
Weakley County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Derrick Bonham arrived at Pocket’s and parked next to Cunningham’s vehicle. When he made contact, Cunningham was on a 9-1-1 call, according to the affidavit. After the call ended, Bonham asked her to exit the vehicle.
Body-worn camera footage shows Cunningham exiting the vehicle, producing a pistol and immediately shooting Bonham, authorities said. She then shot him three additional times while he was incapacitated on the ground, the affidavit states. Investigators said Cunningham also fired two shots toward Martin Police Department officers who were in the Days Inn parking lot.
Bonham died from his injuries. Authorities allege Cunningham acted intentionally and with premeditation. The incident occurred in Weakley County, Tennessee.
