Uptown Jackson fire leaves community in shock; Heavy smoke moving through High Street
JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) —A complicated commercial fire in Uptown Jackson sent shockwaves through the community Thursday night, injuring three brave firefighters and damaging multiple businesses.
As flames engulfed the 100 block of High Street, crews from Jackson Fire Rescue and 11 other departments sprang into action, battling the blaze and working to contain its spread.
The smoke from the buildings is heavy and moving slowly through the area of uptown Jackson.
“We were working the roof line, but the roof started to collapse, so we had to pull guys back out. Three firefighters are currently being treated for injuries, that’s what we’re dealing with right now,” said Michael Gentry, Jackson Fire Rescue public information officer, from the scene.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as the fire broke out. “We were in Lloyd’s doing karaoke and started to smell the smoke. Then we ran outside and saw the fire,” said Barb McCormick, a bystander who witnessed the smoke beginning to rise from the rooftops.
The fire has taken a devastating toll on local businesses, with Sweetheart Florist and Fringe Clothing Boutique among those damaged.
As emergency crews continue to work tirelessly to extinguish the blaze, authorities are urging the public to avoid the area, citing concerns for the safety of both first responders and civilians.
High Street remains closed until further notice.
