Vehicle safety tips for the summer season

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — As the warmer weather approaches, vehicle thefts are on the rise across the country.

Officer Bobby Newton with the Cape Girardeau Police Department emphasizes several important safety measures that people often overlook.

In the event of a car theft, Officer Newton advises reporting the incident promptly.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department utilizes its Flock Camera System to aid in locating stolen vehicles.

“The most important thing is to notify us immediately so we can enter those vehicles into our flock system, which is our camera system,” said Officer Newton. “We can hopefully get those recovered very quickly because we’ve got multiple cameras that we’re linked to. Even if the vehicle goes outside the area, we can still track it and facilitate its recovery.”

When leaving your car unattended, it is essential to remove valuable items, particularly electronics, and ensure that all windows are closed in addition to locking the doors.

For extra protection, consider installing a tracking or alarm system, or an anti-theft device.

Officer Newton says car thefts have decreased since sharing prevention information but reminds people that car thefts and break-ins can occur at any time and in any location.

“It doesn’t matter which area you live in or where you work,” he said. “We’re seeing car thefts all over the city.”
