VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — Vienna Grade School has officially opened a new accessible playground designed to provide inclusive play opportunities for students and the community.

School staff, students and community members attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including Patrick Windhorst and representatives from ACTNow. Superintendent Greg Frehner and school board President Sherie Smith spoke about the project’s importance to the Vienna community.

Principal Nicole Trovillion said the playground represents a commitment to inclusion. “It is a promise that every child, no matter their needs, their abilities or their story, deserves a space to laugh, to play and to feel they truly belong,” she said.

The R.A.M.S. Land Playground — short for Recreation Accessible for Mighty Students — was named by Vienna Grade School students and staff. The playground includes universally designed features such as wheelchair-accessible ramps to multi-level structures, sensory activity panels, musical instruments and a roll-on merry-go-round. Poured-in-place rubber surfacing provides smooth and safe mobility throughout much of the area.

The project was developed after accessibility needs were identified through a communitywide needs assessment. Construction was supported by grant funding from the Full-Service Community Schooling Grant and ACTNow, with Vienna High School serving as the lead agency.

Rachel Mateyka, director of community schooling, said the project reflects a strong commitment to accessibility. “Ultimately, the greatest reward is seeing children of all ages and abilities playing here for many years to come,” she said.

Following the ribbon cutting, attendees enjoyed refreshments and explored the playground. Students continued the celebration the next day with a “Day of Play,” giving each class time to use the playground before sharing hot chocolate together.

The R.A.M.S. Land Playground is open to the public during non-school hours.
