VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — The Vienna High School cheerleading team is headed to state after winning an IHSA sectional championship and making school history.

The Eagles captured first place at the IHSA Sectional Competition held at Edwardsville High School, finishing atop a field of 16 teams. The win secured Vienna a spot in the IHSA State Cheerleading Competition in Bloomington, where only the top five teams from each sectional advance.

Vienna will compete in the state preliminary round at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Grossinger Arena. The top 10 teams from preliminaries will advance to the state finals on Saturday, Feb. 7.

In addition to the team’s success, three Vienna cheerleaders will be recognized as Illinois High School Cheerleading Coaches Organization All-State selections during Friday’s events. Honorees include junior Gracelyn Yadloski, sophomore Bristyl Eckhart and freshman Karlinn Bundren. The All-State designation recognizes athletes for outstanding skill, leadership, dedication and commitment to the sport.

“This moment is the result of years of sacrifice, hard work, trust and heart from these athletes,” head coach Staci Shafer said. “They show up every day ready to work, push each other and chase excellence together.”

Assistant coach Shauna Yadloski said the team’s effort reflects the intensity of competitive cheerleading.

“Eight months of work comes down to some of the hardest minutes in sports,” she said. “Advancing to state is a well-earned achievement, and we are excited to represent Vienna on the state stage.”

Athletic Director David Hill said the team’s accomplishment is significant for both the cheer program and the community, citing the athletes’ dedication and accountability.

Superintendent Joshua Stafford also praised the program, noting the long-term commitment of the coaching staff to building a strong foundation across all grade levels.
