VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — Vienna High School is marking the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a landmark federal law enacted in 1975 to ensure students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education.

School officials said the milestone highlights the work of educators who support students with disabilities through individualized instruction and inclusive learning environments. Vienna High School’s special education team includes Lenore Ashby, Kara Hight and Michelle Hunsaker, who collectively bring more than 55 years of experience in special education.

“We celebrate IDEA and also celebrate those who make it possible,” Principal John Giffin said. “I am thankful for our special educators and for their unwavering commitment to students of all abilities. Through personalized instruction, advocacy and support, they create learning environments where students can reach their full potential.”

Superintendent Joshua Stafford said special education plays a critical role in student success.

“Special education is at the heart of ensuring every student has the tools, confidence and support to succeed,” Stafford said. “Mrs. Ashby, Mrs. Hight and Mrs. Hunsaker embody that mission every day. Their dedication, creativity and care make Vienna High School a place where all students can thrive.”

Hight, who has spent 22 years teaching special education, said the law has had a lasting impact on students and families.

“I have seen how IDEA has changed the lives of students with disabilities,” Hight said. “Every child deserves to be included, heard and seen. We have a great team at Vienna High School that goes above and beyond every day to advocate for our students.”

Since its passage, IDEA has reshaped education nationwide by requiring schools to provide services tailored to students’ unique needs. School officials said its impact continues to be evident at Vienna High School through individualized support and a culture of inclusion.

As the anniversary is observed, the school community is also recognizing the educators who continue to carry out the law’s mission each day.
