VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — A Vienna High School English instructor has been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education with an Award of Meritorious Service through the Illinois Teacher of the Year program.
Grayson Dawes received the honor, which recognizes educators across the state for excellence in teaching, leadership and service to their school communities.
The Award of Meritorious Service is presented to teachers who demonstrate significant contributions beyond their daily classroom responsibilities. School officials said Dawes was recognized for her instructional impact, commitment to student growth and leadership within the school.
Dawes is a graduate of Vienna Grade School and Vienna High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in reading from McKendree University. She has completed additional graduate work in English and social studies and also teaches literature, English and education courses at the collegiate level.
Principal John Giffin said Dawes challenges students to think critically and communicate effectively, adding that her dedication to academic rigor and student development makes her deserving of the recognition.
Superintendent Joshua Stafford said Dawes has demonstrated a strong commitment to student achievement and curriculum development. He noted her efforts to help students prepare for college placement exams and career readiness assessments, as well as integrating assignments focused on professional resume development and life readiness skills.
Rebecca Guest, dean of instruction, said Dawes is committed to continuous improvement and uses research-based instructional practices to support and challenge all learners.
The Illinois Teacher of the Year program annually recognizes educators who demonstrate sustained contributions to their schools and communities. Dawes joins a select group of Illinois teachers to receive the designation.
