NORMAL, Ill., (KBSI) — The Vienna High School Speech Team competed at the IHSA Sectional Tournament held at University High School in Normal.

Students representing Vienna included Abelina Allen in Extemporaneous Speaking, Kyran Thorne in Informative Speaking, Olivia Quertermous in Original Oratory and Special Occasion Speaking, Mary-Kate Starrick in Poetry, and Sean Crabb in Radio.

Olivia Quertermous was the team’s lone finalist, placing seventh in Original Oratory.

Head Coach Jake Lane praised the team’s efforts and thanked school staff, parents, assistant coaches and judges for their support throughout the season. He also recognized Mrs. Laura Hosfeldt for her leadership and commended the students for their dedication and resilience.

The sectional appearance reflects continued growth for the program. Last season, Vienna advanced to sectionals in two events. This year, the team qualified in six events, marking an increase in participation and competitiveness.

Superintendent Dr. Joshua Stafford said the advancement demonstrates the students’ commitment and the program’s rising standards.

Although the team did not advance to the IHSA State Finals, the season will conclude with competition at the Greater Illinois NSDA District Tournament on March 7 in Normal. The NSDA tournament is part of the National Speech & Debate Association circuit and offers students an opportunity to qualify for national competition.

Officials said the sectional performance marks one of the most successful seasons in recent program history as the team builds momentum heading into district competition.
