MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (KBSI) – A man suspected in a deadly shooting in Murphysboro turned himself in to authorities Thursday night.

Murphysboro police and Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were called at 8 p.m. near 13th Street to find a man with multiple gunshot wounds dead.

Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph Cervantez says there is a video identifying the suspect. He says they were fortunate enough to have a video of the instance.

The video cannot be shared at this time. However, he says throughout the video it was easy to identify the suspect.

“We had enough to identify the suspect as 49-year-old Daron Woods,” said Cervantez.

He says the video shows a fight between two men that leads to one man tripping over a table and then being stabbed.

The man who was stabbed was Clyde Boozer. Boozer was then rushed to Carbondale Memorial Hospital and treated for his injuries and released this morning.

Maurice Funchess witnessed this fighting altercation between Boozer and Woods and stepped in and intervened. Daron Woods then fled the scene.

Woods then came back an hour later and shot Maurice Funchess multiple times at close range. He was 29.

“Because he intervened it might’ve led to another altercation that ultimately led to him being shot and killed here in Murphysboro Illinois.”

The investigation is still ongoing as Cervantez believes Daron Woods was not alone.

“We believe he was with at least one other individual,” said Cervantez.

Kimberly Oswald and April Jones are both workers for Start Specialized Training Rehabilitation Center near 13th Street in Murphysboro. They said that they heard about the shooting that morning when they got to work as a couple of patients were concerned that it happened so close.

“We heard it on the news this morning and it’s really sad since a lot of our population like to walk the community.”

April Jones says there is crime everywhere but it’s unusual for it to happen around the Rehabilitation Center as everyone is friendly.

“Friendly people speak you know no issues at all. I feel that with something like that, this is when communities need to come together and try to come up with a resolution to solve the problem. ”

According to Cervantez , Daron Woods turned himself into the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 22.

Woods has a detention hearing at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 23.

Cervantez wants to highlight the Murphysboro Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Williamson County law enforcement for cooperating with the Jackson County State’s Attorney Office to reach this resolution.

No one else was injured in the search for Daron L. Woods.
