West Frankfort families, staff speak out after school staffing cuts

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (KBSI) — New concerns are emerging from families and staff in West Frankfort following recent staffing cuts within the district.

During a recent school board meeting, community members spoke out about the impact of multiple positions being eliminated, urging district leaders to reconsider the decisions. Several speakers said the cuts could create new challenges in classrooms, as remaining staff take on additional responsibilities.

Some also raised concerns about whether students will continue receiving the level of support and resources they need moving forward.

One speaker criticized the board’s decision-making, saying leaders were not fully representing the community.

“Your job as a school board is to represent the community’s voice… that voice is being ignored. Your job also includes advocating for our students… you’re working against them,” the speaker said.

Beyond the classroom, some families say the effects of the cuts are already being felt at home.

One emotional moment during the meeting highlighted that impact, as a child spoke about her mother losing her job and the uncertainty their family now faces.

“She’s been going through a lot of stuff… she’s been making choices about losing her job… trying to find a new job so she can keep this family intact… she needs to get money so she can live the life and help us… we’re her family… that’s it…” the child said.

District leaders have said the staffing changes are tied to ongoing financial challenges, noting that many schools across Illinois are facing similar budget pressures.

Officials say they will continue working through those decisions in the weeks ahead.
