Williamson County Deputies assist confused driver after traffic stop

MARION, Ill., (KBSI) — An 84-year-old driver was assisted by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday after failing to yield to deputies on Illinois Route 37.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:31 p.m. near Stotlar Road, where the driver’s vehicle crossed the centerline and stopped in the middle of the roadway during heavy traffic conditions.

Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to yield and departed northbound toward Johnston City.

The vehicle stopped and started multiple times, with speeds ranging from 5 to 40 mph.

With assistance from the Johnston City Police Department, deputies were able to stop the vehicle on Illinois Route 37 just north of Johnston City.

Upon investigation, deputies determined that the driver was unaware of his surroundings and appeared to be suffering from severe memory loss.

He was transported to a medical facility by EMS as a precautionary measure, and his vehicle was released to family members.

No citations were issued in connection with the incident.
