Williamson County Deputy badly injured after hitting a deer

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) -A deputy suffered multiple injuries after his patrol vehicle hit a deer.
According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office they responded to a Deputy Injured Response Call.
On November 22, 2024, at 6:36 pm a Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was involved in a single vehicle accident while responding to a call for service.
WCSO was responding to an incident which was reported as “a loud gunshot and a lady yelling” on Pittsburg Road.
The responding Deputy was traveling northbound on Pittsburg Road, just south of Khoury League Road, when he struck a deer in the roadway.
The patrol vehicle was severely damaged causing it to leave the roadway, travel down a steep embankment, and come to rest in several feet of water at the bottom of a ravine.
The Deputy suffered severe, but not life threatening, injuries which required him to be extricated from the patrol vehicle.
He was transported to a local trauma center where he was surgically treated to stabilize initial injuries.
It is anticipated that he will be transferred to a St. Louis regional trauma center in the coming hours to undergo further treatment.
“The injuries sustained by our Deputy are a mere sample of the risks law enforcement are routinely exposed to. We are thankful this Deputy was not more severely injured and will support him and his family as we anxiously await his return to service”, says Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich.
The patrol vehicle appears to have been traveling at normal highway speed at the time of incident and the Deputy was wearing his seat belt which likely averted more serious injuries.
Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says they are thankful for all the responding agencies that provided assistance and extend a special thank you to the several good Samaritans who arrived on scene prior to the arrival of first responders and assisted the Deputy.
