HERRIN, Ill., (KBSI) – The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office reported that inmate crews collected 550 pounds of litter Thursday during a work detail along Illinois Route 148 between Route 13 and Brewster Road.
The cleanup effort stretched through Herrin and Energy as part of the sheriff’s “Inmate Work Detail” program, which utilizes low-level, nonviolent offenders to assist in community projects.
“Every pound of trash collected represents more than just cleaner roadways; it’s a reflection of our commitment to public safety, pride in our communities, and the hard work of those giving back through this program,” Sheriff Jeff Diederich said in a statement. “It’s about accountability, service, and showing that together we can make a visible difference.”
Since the program began in December 2024, participants have removed more than 11,000 pounds of trash from county roadways and public areas.
Work details are overseen by a uniformed deputy and jail administrators, with inmates wearing bright orange clothing and signage posted to alert motorists. The program not only helps beautify the county but also provides inmates with credit toward community service obligations and an opportunity to give back.
