JOHNSTON CITY, Ill., (KBSI) — A Williamson County man was arrested after deputies said he fired a handgun to scare away a process server earlier this month.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 6:43 p.m. Sept. 4 to 911 call reporting gunshots in the 17000 block of Illinois Route 37. The caller, a process server, told authorities she had left the property after attempting to deliver legal papers when she heard shots fired.

Deputies arriving at the scene encountered a man armed with a handgun. After several commands, the man lowered the weapon and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was identified as Steven R. King, who deputies said admitted firing a round into the ground to scare the process server.

King was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony under Illinois law.
