Witness describes when shot rang out at graduation ceremony

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – It was a scary situation for many who were at the Show Me Center for a graduation ceremony Sunday afternoon when a gunshot ran out.

Two people were injured. A person of interest is in custody.

FOX23 News spoke with a young man who was inside the concession stand when he heard shots ring out.

“It was, it was a panic,” said Brock Freeman. “I was, along with everyone else, I started seeing everyone running, I was like, ‘Oh, okay, this is real.’ I ran to the back room, tried to find a place to hide, then I was just panicking, nervous, scared.”

Freeman was a volunteer helping out at the graduation, and also cheering on a friend who’s graduating.

He was in the concession stand working when all of a sudden, a shots rang out.

Two people were shot. A bullet casing lande close to Freeman.

He ran to the backroom and locked himself in to hide from the shooter.

He says it was mayhem.

“I called my mom, I gave a phone call to my mom and I was like, ‘You know what, mom, I love you. I’ll make it out, I just want you to know that,'” said Freeman.

One of the people who was shot is a relative of Freeman’s friend. He called his friend to ask how the person was doing.

“She said, ‘It’s not good. I’m not doing well.’ So she’s a mess, but I’m going to be there to support her,” said Freeman.

Freeman is frustrated to see how this kind of violence can ruin a day that was supposed to be happy and full of pride.

“Nobody should be mourning the loss of a loved one today,” he said. “They should be celebrating one of life’s most amazing accomplishments, that’s graduation.”

This investigation is ongoing. Police are still piecing together what happened during the shooting.
