Woman dies after being hit by vehicle in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking across the street in Cape Girardeau.

According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department on Friday November 1, 2024, around 2:52 pm officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to the 700 block of Bellevue in response to a person being hit by a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they found that Everrett D. Garrett age 30, of Cape Girardeau, MO was driving a 2002 Ford Escape that struck 85-year-old Margarita Diaz-Fernandez, of Cape Girardeau, MO.

The investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was traveling west on Bellevue from North Sprigg Street when it struck a pedestrian that was walking northbound across Bellevue.

Fernandez was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

This investigation is ongoing.
