MOREHOUSE, Mo. (KBSI) – Authorities think an unattended candle sparked a deadly house fire in Morehouse on Monday.

New Madrid County Sheriff’s deputies and Morehouse and Sikeston fire personnel responded to the 500 block of E. Pine Street in Morehouse around 4 a.m. on May 27 to a residential fire.

A person was still inside the home when emergency crews arrived.

The blaze broke out at a single family home shortly before 4 a.m., according to the deputies with the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department.

Emergency crews reported seeing smoke coming from two sides of the house when they arrived.

Firefighters entered the property and discovered a woman on the floor of the main bedroom.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the New Madrid County coroner.

The fire was determined to have been started in a bedroom at the rear of the house by an unattended candle used for lighting while the power was out.

The Morehouse Fire Department, Sikeston Department of Public Safety & the Missouri Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the fire.
