Wreckage of car found in Mississippi River near New Madrid

NEW MADRID, Mo. (KBSI) – Parts of a car were found in the Mississippi River near New Madrid on Sunday, Oct. 2.

A couple reported finding a car in the mud at the bottom of the New Madrid boat ramp Sunday afternoon, according to the New Madrid Police Department.

Over the course of a couple of hours, parts of the wreckage were pulled from the river and sifted.

No human bones were found in the wreckage.

A license plate that expired in 1985 was pulled from the car. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is working to identify plate. Missouri license plate are purged from the system after several years.

The New Madrid Police Department, New Madrid Fire Department, New Madrid County Sheriffs Department, New Madrid County Coroner’s office, and the Missouri Department of Conservation responded to the recovery.

The wreckage was marked with caution tape. Citizens are urged to contact the police if they find anything suspicious while the river is so low.
