Zoo escapes major injuries after storm; cleanup efforts underway

St. Louis, Mo., (KBSI) — The zoo sustained significant damage from Friday’s storms, but fortunately reported no major injuries to people or animals.

Downed trees caused the most damage, blocking guest paths, fences and event tents. The Mary Ann Lee Butterfly Wing’s roof was also severely damaged, but staff quickly recovered most of the butterflies.

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House is providing temporary care for the displaced butterflies.

Zoo staff were praised for their quick response during the storm, bringing guests to safety and activating emergency protocols to ensure animal safety.

The zoo will remain closed Saturday for cleanup. A decision on Sunday’s Make Tracks Through the Zoo event will be made by 1 p.m. Saturday.
