Mild on New Year’s Day; Storms possible early next week (12/31/22)
New Year’s Eve was a very dreary day for most of the area, and many will experience much of the same for New Year’s Day.
Fog development will be possible for many early Sunday, with lingering low clouds into the afternoon. That said, our southern counties may be able to see a little bit more sunshine for the second
half of the day. As a result, we’re forecasting slightly warmer high temperatures to the south.
Even Cape Girardeau may see a little clearing on Sunday evening. However, we’ll have cloudy skies once again by Monday, with more fog development being possible. On Monday afternoon, storm chances will be increasing across the area. Rain chances will really ramp up on Monday night, persisting into the overnight hours.
For areas that see the heaviest rainfall, several inches of rain will be possible. This will provide some much-needed precipitation to the area.
There is also a chance for a few storms to be on the stronger side. Much of southeast Missouri has been placed under a Marginal (Level 1/5) risk for severe weather. However, the majority of the severe weather on Monday and Monday night appears to be to our south.
Tuesday should be another warm day, but a cold front passage in the evening will send temperatures falling for the remainder of the week.
