3rd annual Muddy River Marathon

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- Runners of all skill levels will soon be lacing up their shoes for the 3rd annual Muddy River Marathon.

Muddy River Marathon Co-Director Brandon Hahs says the race provides a great way to give back to the city.

“The need for it is to continue bringing events to Cape Girardeau, showcase the city, and support charitable causes. It’s crucial for us to give back to the community,” said Hahs.

The 26.2 miles marathon brings out all kinds of competitors. Including.

Brad Mueth who will be running in the race for the third year in a row.

Mueth says his training wasn’t the strictest this time but 14 weeks out it was time to focus.

“For a certain number of weeks, you focus on building your base mileage. But typically, about 14 weeks out, you should get a training plan and start gradually increasing your mileage,” said Mueth.

Nathan Stearns, a runner hitting the ground for his second Muddy River Marathon says that he decided to challenge his limits with the race after being inspired by a book written by an ultramarathon runner.

“Pretty much everything I heard in that book aligned with what I was writing at the time, so I began running longer distances. As a thrill-seeker, I enjoy pushing my physical limits, and these marathons certainly provide that challenge,” said Stearns.

Both competitors recommend the marathon to anyone looking for support on their fitness journey.

“Remember, we all have to start somewhere. Just take that first step, and even if it’s by participating in a local 5K, start small and keep going,” said Mueth.

“I cannot express how thankful and grateful I am for all the volunteers who come out to help,” said Stearns.

Those looking to run have until midnight on Thursday, April 27th to register.

And those looking to volunteer can meet at century casino Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m. for an in-person information session.
