Fort D volunteers open doors to the community, highlight the historical significance 

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Sunday, Fort D volunteers welcomed the community to an event aimed at providing insights into the historical building and offering guided tours.  

The Cape Girardeau Civil War Roundtable gathered to discuss recent improvements made to the building and emphasize its importance to the community. 

Scott House, coordinator of Fort D, expressed their role as tour guides for Cape Girardeau, stating, “We act as the tour guides for Cape Girardeau for people who come into town and discover that we are here.” 

During the event, Scott House engaged visitors by sharing the building’s rich history, spanning from its construction to subsequent improvements throughout the years. 

House explained, “Naturally, we didn’t think that it was all that regular, so Bill and I took tape, compass, and everything, surveyed all these, and found out that if this is the middle of the thing, the other half will fold over it correctly. It’s pretty much a mirror image.” 

Fort D stands as a testament to the region’s historical significance, attracting both locals and visitors interested in exploring the area’s past.  

The event provided an opportunity for the community to learn more about this iconic landmark and its contributions to the city’s heritage.
