BMU opens fourth water plant in Sikeston

SIKESTON Mo. (KBSI) – A ribbon cutting of the Board of Municipal Utilities’ water plant was held on October 24.

Residents were invited to a tour of the site to understand where the water comes from and the process used to treat it.

Rick Landers, who is director of Utilities says, “We started working on this in probably 2015 and this a culmination of that effort to build a new water plant to help with our aging infrastructure.”

With plant #1 built back in 1932, it exceeded its need for maintenance and use if one million gallons since the city has grown and garnered a higher demand of water. However, there are plans to renovate the last three plants.

Jeff Winders, who is Operations Supervisor says, “We’re taking them down and doing to major overhauls to them, some rehabs. And bring them back up to the, I guess you can say the 21st century, so we can continue to grow and be ready to supply Sikeston with water.”

Plant #4 holds 4.3 million gallons per day and is expected to supply the city of Sikeston for the next 30 years.
