Jackson Board of Aldermen approves sale with Rubbermaid

JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) – The Jackson Board of Aldermen is approving a contract to sell to Newell Rubbermaid Development, LLC approximately 5.6 acres of land across from the existing Rubbermaid facility.

The land is in the south industrial park of the city with West Jackson Trail on the south and Goose Creek on the west.  The city sold the property for $33,929 per acre, for a total purchase price of $190,000.

Rubbermaid previously leased the land from the city for employee and truck parking.

Thereafter, the city converted the land to a commuter lot available for free to the public. Rubbermaid continued to use the land for parking of its large trucks and trailers, and employee parking.

Last year, Rubbermaid officials contacted the City about purchasing the land. Rubbermaid cited the need for expansion to increase equipment parking and to secure its equipment from public access.

The site will also be used for employee parking by use of the pedestrian bridge from the lot across Goose Creek to the Rubbermaid facility.

Rubbermaid is the largest manufacturer located in the City and the second largest employer in the city, employing over 200 people at the Jackson facility.

“The support of our local businesses is a primary mission of the City of Jackson,” said Mayor Hahs.

“The success of Rubbermaid, our largest manufacturer, continues to grow and helping improve their business is important. The existing Rubbermaid manufacturing plant has a long history in Jackson being one of the first industries located here by the Jackson Industrial Development Corporation in 1964 as Lee Rowan.”

Jackson, which has experienced significant population growth the past few decades, can be proud that Rubbermaid has once again chose to beef up its operations here. It will bring more people to town and assures continued growth in Jackson.

The sale eliminates the City’s commuter parking lot which has shared the site with Rubbermaid. Jackson will permanently close the lot to all public parking and any private vehicles currently utilizing the lot will need to be moved. The City will provide to those who use the lot a minimum 30-day notice via city website and posting a sign to allow citizens an opportunity to make other arrangements.
