3 face charges, 1 injured after report of battery in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – Three people face charges after police responded to a report of a three people battering a person.

Mt. Vernon police officers, Mt. Vernon firefighters and personnel from Litton’s Ambulance responded to the 1100 block of South 23rd on Sunday, May 19 at 6:35 p.m. for a report of three people battering another person.

When officers arrived, they learned the three people had left the area.

Officers began checking the area and found the three suspects walking nearby.

As the officers approached, they say one of the suspects, Caleb Phillips, began running from officers. He was arrested.

Officers began interviewing the victim and witnesses. They developed probable cause to arrest all three.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Phillips was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center on charges of mob action, battery and resisting arrest.

Police say Kadin M. Gulley and Jacob Fowler made threats of retaliation toward those involved.

Both Gulley and Fowler face charges of battery, mob action and intimidation.

All three remain behind bars pending a court hearing.
