Carbondale Police Department locate body of missing person

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – The Carbondale Police Department, assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, responded to a report of a deceased person in a rural area between North Oakland Street and New Era Road on October 5, 2024, at approximately 2:20 p.m.

Following an investigation, the body was identified as Richard Slomkowski, a 67-year-old Carbondale resident who had been missing since August 13, 2024.

According to authorities, no foul play is suspected, and Slomkowski’s death is believed to be accidental.

Carbondale City Manager and Police Chief Stan Reno stated that the investigation remains ongoing and encouraged anyone with information to contact the Carbondale Police Department.

Chief Reno expressed his department’s deepest sympathies to Slomkowski’s family and loved ones, saying, “We are grateful for the assistance provided by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, and all those who contributed to the search efforts.
