Carbondale man face’s murder charges for killing mother

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – A 65-year-old Carbondale man was arrested for allegedly killing his mother.
According to documents released by the Carbondale Police Department on March 19, 2024, City of Carbondale police officers responded to the 100 block of South Hewitt in response to an elderly female who was reported to be unresponsive.
Officers, and emergency medical responders, arrived on scene and attempted life-saving efforts but were unable to revive the woman who was identified as the resident, 85-year-old Shelby Winfield.
Carbondale Police officers and detectives, assisted by the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, continued to investigate the circumstances leading to Winfield’s death for several months.
The investigation led to the arrest of Winfield’s son.
On December 13, 2024, William L. Walters, age 65 of Carbondale, was arrested on two counts of First-Degree Murder.
Carbondale officers and detectives located Walters in the 100 block of North Tower Road on December 13, 2024 and arrested him on the warrant without incident. Walters was taken to Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.
