Local grocery stores feeling the pressure through winter storms

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – As winter weather approaches grocery stores often fill up fast with shoppers.

Local grocery stores often struggle to keep shelves at stocked when weather events happen as people buy more than usual to prepare.

Donna Crites is a grocery store Manager at Food Giantof Cape Girardeau. She says they often have to buy double of certain items to keep up.

The biggest thing is the amount of food that people are getting at a time. All the milk, some customers getting three or four gallons at a time. All the bread we have left. That seems to be our biggest problem” says Crites.

When unusual weather or natural disasters hit people often start panic buying. Buying up things like bread, toilet paper and milk. This causes grocery stores get hectic and full quick.

Keagan Dover is a cashier at Food Giant. He says they’ve seen a big increase in the number of items people are buying.

It’s been pretty busy, we’ve had multiple carts full. Weve had to go out to get more carts to load bags in.”

Although things can get pretty crazy Dover says they stay prepared!

“It gets pretty chaotic, when people come through, but we have a pretty good team here. Were on top of it.”

Manager Donna Crites says they open even when the weathers bad to help customers

“Don’t panic when weather is going to start getting bad because we will be open for whatever you need.”
