Franklin County Sheriff’s Office retires K9 Riot due to medical condition

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is retiring K9 Riot, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, due to a medical condition.
Riot has been diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), a progressive and incurable heart condition common in large dog breeds. This condition significantly impairs Riot’s ability to tolerate physical exertion.
During his active service, Riot made significant contributions to combating drug issues in Franklin County. He played a crucial role in seizing over 3.5 pounds of methamphetamine, 37 pounds of cannabis, and six stolen firearms. Riot also assisted in numerous apprehensions of wanted individuals and helped seize over $50,000 in drug-related currency.
The Sheriff’s Office recognizes Deputy Ryan Payne, Riot’s handler, for his dedication to the K9 program. Riot will remain in Deputy Payne’s personal care for the remainder of his life.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for Riot’s service and dedication to his colleagues and the community.
