Local law enforcement agencies encourage citizens to stay off roadways during inclement weather

SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – When it comes to winter weather experts say being prepared is key.

Keeping your vehicle stocked with things like an ice scraper, extra blankets and salt are all important.

Local law enforcement saying just simply don’t get out if you don’t have too.

Scott City Chief of Police Chris Griggs says he also encourages people to stay home if possible, during severe winter weather.

You know of course with any kind of inclement weather that’s forecasted such as the next few days. We recommend people to stay home, if at all possible, it can become very treacherous and makes it hard for first responders to get there sometimes because we have to drive through the same thing you are.”

According to Scott City police Chief Chris Griggs if you must get out you should let someone know where you are going and when you’ll be back home, have safety supplies in your vehicle such as water, blankets, and a fully charged phone.

During snow or ice vehicles can slide off the side of the road. If you see a vehicle that’s covered in caution tape this means, it’s already been checked by law enforcement.

Ya so typically if there’s a vehicle and it’s been involved in an accident, and it can’t be towed or removed right away we tag the vehicle so other law enforcement agencies know that it’s been checked” says Griggs.

Griggs says highway departments work around the clock when winter weather hits so utilizing the MoDot tracker app before getting out will help with knowing if you’re route is clear or not.

Stay in as much as possible. Give the crews and highway departments time to work ultimately, they do a good job” says Griggs. “Our staff here for our city does an amazing job with the roads and theyll be out full force working around the clock to make sure roads are cleared so commutes can happen.”

To check roadways in your area of Missouri use the MoDot tracker.
