Vienna High School students get a heart-stopping lesson on a snow day

VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — While schools in the region were closed due to snow, Vienna High’s nursing classes took part in a unique learning experience, observing a live heart surgery.

The event, organized by nursing instructor Sherie Taylor Smith and Illinois Area Health Education Centers, allowed 13 students to watch a 2 1/2-hour open-heart surgery performed at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois.

Students interacted with physicians and gained insight into the various roles and skills required in an operating room.

“This real-life learning exposure helps our students become passionate about their career goals,” Smith said.

Superintendent Dr. Joshua Stafford praised the initiative, saying it reflected the school’s commitment to providing students with meaningful career opportunities.

Students who participated in the event shared their reactions, with many expressing gratitude for the experience and newfound appreciation for the medical field.
