Ameren Missouri reminds customers of available energy assistance programs

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Ameren Missouri reminds customers that energy assistance programs, including the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), are available.
LIHEAP applications are due May 31 through the Missouri Department of Social Services.
Ameren Missouri partners with over 800 agencies to help customers apply for energy assistance programs, which are available year-round.
One popular solution for homeowners is investing in solar panels. Nancy Maxfield, a local resident, said installing solar panels was one of the best decisions she’s made to reduce monthly expenses.
“Solar was the way to go to subsidize our utilities,” Maxfield said. “With our fixed income, we felt this was the only way we could realistically manage utility costs.”
Since installing 31 solar panels in 2018, Maxfield said her utility bill has been cut in half.
To help more residents struggling with utility bills, Ameren Missouri has partnered with more than 800 agencies to promote the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally funded initiative.
“Assistance is always helpful, especially if someone is just getting by month to month,” said Connie Sanchez, customer advocacy associate at Ameren Missouri. “We offer support for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children.”
LIHEAP provides a one-time payment of more than $300 toward heating or cooling bills and offers crisis assistance of up to $800 through the end of May. Customers do not need to be behind on their payments to qualify.
“We encourage those in need to apply for LIHEAP before funds expire,” said Morgan Skaggs, program coordinator of East Missouri Action Agency. “Those who qualify or may not qualify for LIHEAP can also apply for Ameren Missouri’s energy assistance programs.”
Ameren Missouri offers various programs, including:
• Keeping Current: a monthly bill credit and help reducing total amount owed
• Keeping Cool: up to five bill credits of $50 from May to September for eligible customers
• Weatherization improvements for qualifying homeowners and renters
• The Dollar More Program: donations to help those struggling to afford energy bills
• New Start Energy Relief pilot program: helping unhoused electric customers return to permanent housing
