Pride month in Missouri marked by celebration and political tension
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — As Pride Month begins, this year’s celebrations carry a heavier weight amid a tense political climate for LGBTQIA+ Americans.
This year, more than 900 anti-trans bills are under consideration across the country, according to the independent research organization Trans Legislation Tracker. Missouri alone accounts for 67 of them — second only to Texas.
The proposed laws are aimed at restricting health care access, education, and legal recognition for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.
The American Civil Liberties Union posted a statement to social media which said, “Pride is still a protest.”
Local advocate Joseph Cubria Farris said he remains hopeful – wanting to take on a positive outlook.
“It’s a protest in the sense that we’re just all wanting to be one family,” he said. “The political climate is going to be the political climate, whether or not we we make a fuss about it or we celebrate what we’re supposed to be doing.”
Cubria Farris and his husband will be presenting a section of the historic two-mile pride flag — a symbol of global unity — at this year’s Pride in the Park event, Sunday, June 8.
He said it means the world to him.
“This flag is a symbol of hope. It’s a symbol of positivity, togetherness, inclusivity,” he said, “it’s a symbol of worldwide — 100% — one human family.”
Despite the politics, local ally and PLFAG member Mary Maginel said this year’s Pride is still a celebration — and a reminder that everyone deserves to be seen.
“It’s an opportunity for people to be themselves and be with friends and family that they care about and celebrate who they are,” she said. “People might be a little more hesitant because of the political climate, but we hope that this will be a safe event and that people will still come out.”
Organizers said everyone — whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally — you’re welcome at Pride.
Pride in the Park is Sunday, June 8 at Capaha Park, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. According to organizers, it is a family-friendly event where there will be food trucks, vendor/business booths, music and other entertainment. For more information, click here.
