Suspect arrested in connection with Portageville homicide investigation
PORTAGEVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — Authorities say a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a man found lying in a roadway.
David Chamberlain was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of 5th Street and Warren Avenue on June 22. Coroner George Delisle pronounced him dead at the scene.
New Madrid County Prosecutor Andrew Lawson charged 18-year-old Trey Sutton with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Sheriff Joey Higgerson says investigators worked around the clock to identify a suspect and take him into custody. Higgerson praised the efforts of the Southeast Missouri Major Case Squad, which assisted in the investigation.
The investigation also led to the arrest of Sutton’s father, Jeremy Sutton, who was charged with tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance. Four others were jailed on charges of tampering with physical evidence and/or possession of a controlled substance.
Higgerson warned that interfering with a murder investigation is unacceptable, and more arrests are expected.
“There is absolutely no excuse for interfering with or hindering a Murder investigation, and more arrests are expected. In particular, I’d like to thank our partner agencies with the SEMO Major Case Squad for their assistance. Within an hour of the first call, investigators from seven different agencies were on the scene collecting evidence and conducting interviews. If not for their tireless efforts, this case would not have come to such a quick resolution.” Higgerson said.
