1 person killed, another injured in Mt. Vernon apartment fire

MT. VERNON, Ill., (KBSI) — A fire at an apartment complex on Short Street killed one person and injured another Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 504 Short Street around 7:25 p.m. after receiving a call about a working apartment fire. Crews arrived within three minutes and found flames in one of the units.

One victim was located by Mt. Vernon firefighters, who entered through a window. A second victim was found and removed by Jefferson firefighters.

The first victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The second victim was flown to a St. Louis hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
