Minimum wage increase to benefit SEMO student workers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Student employees at Southeast Missouri State University will soon see a pay raise for their on campus positions.

The campus minimum wage will increase from the current rate of $10.50 an hour to $13.75 on August 28, the wage will later increase to $15 an hour on January 1, 2026 for on campus positions.

Dan Presson, assistant vice president of economic and workforce development at SEMO, said the increase will make on campus jobs more enticing for student workers.

“For the student, it’s going to be great,” Presson said. “They’re no longer going to be at a reduced hourly wage. They’re going to be making some really good money, which is excellent.”

Presson said campus jobs can make a lasting impact on the college experience, offering flexible scheduling that prioritizes the student. “Sometimes the best job you can have while you’re in college is working for the university,” he said.

While the wage increase will require budget adjustments, Presson said the university will adapt by reviewing schedules, hours and more.

Students can find campus positions through Handshake, an online job board connecting students and employers. Opportunities range from watering plants in the campus greenhouse to assisting at athletic events or working in administrative offices and more.

Presson encouraged students to visit the Career Services office to begin building a professional resume after securing a position.
