Paducah Riverfront Redevelopment Project takes shape
PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) – Over the past several weeks, the skyline of Paducah’s riverfront has begun to shift. A large crane, now visible above the floodwall, signals active construction on the Paducah Riverfront Infrastructure Improvement Project—part of the BUILD grant initiative. After six years of planning, permitting and anticipation, the project is officially underway.
The tour begins at the entrance to the Paducah-McCracken County Convention & Expo Center at Fifth Street and Park Avenue. The newly reconfigured entrance is now open. A multimodal pathway—designed for both pedestrians and cyclists—guides visitors past the Quilt Murals and toward the Greenway Trail along the riverfront.
Following the Greenway Trail, visitors will see the early stages of new pathways winding through what will become a green space. Seat wall benches are being installed to provide resting spots along the trail.
Between the Harrison Street floodwall opening and the transient dock, crews are constructing a compass rose feature. This artistic installation will include concentric concrete rings and wave designs filled with colored pavers arranged in a compass pattern. Bollards will be placed to clearly separate pedestrian and bicycle lanes from vehicle traffic. Nearby, a terraced mound is being built to offer additional seating and scenic views of the park and the Ohio River.
Continuing through Schultz Park, barges can be seen anchored in the river as construction progresses on the riverboat excursion pier. This pier will accommodate riverboats at various water levels. Once the trail is complete, pedestrians will be able to reach the new excursion plaza, which will feature decorative pavers and a grand staircase leading from the large floodwall opening between Broadway and Jefferson streets.
The project concludes at the Broadway floodwall opening, where the pier and walkway end. This entry point invites visitors to explore and enjoy Downtown Paducah.
The BUILD grant project brings together years of community planning and integrates key elements of the Greenway Trail and Riverfront Redevelopment Master Plan. The full project is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
