‘Project Connect’ event connected around 500 families with free food and resources

SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – Around 500 families received food and resources in Sikeston.

The First United Methodist Church held an event open to the public called Project Connect.

The event started at 10:00 am with a mobile food pantry, then families were able to attend a resource fair type event inside the church that had more than 25 free resources. So many vehicles showed up for the event that Sikeston DPS had to assist with traffic, the event ran until 2:00 pm.

Jennifer Moxley, lead Pastor of Sikeston First United Methodist Church shares that this is their second year holding Project Connect. The event offered, free haircuts, free lunch, free legal advice, free pediatrician services, mammograms, paper and feminine products and more. Moxley shares that they anticipated a big turn out and the event aimed to help as many families as possible.

That it will help them kind of get through, especially with some of the cuts we’re seeing” says Moxley. “Right now, a lot of folks are experiencing food insecurity and so our hope is just that they will be able to eat, that they’ll be able to feed their families and be able to get by a little bit. 

With the help of SEMO mobile food pantry, community members, and church volunteers, the event was able to serve around 500 families.

“We’re really, really thankful that we’re here, that we’re able to offer some services to our community” says Moxley.
