PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — The Paducah Fire Prevention Division is expanding its outreach and education efforts through new communication initiatives and continued regional collaboration aimed at strengthening fire and building code compliance.

This week, the division launched its Code Explanation Initiative, a series of email updates designed to clarify code interpretations, explain recent changes and provide practical guidance for contractors, engineers and neighboring jurisdictions. The effort complements the Regional Code Workshops, which have grown steadily since the division established them in 2014.

“I applaud the Fire Prevention Division’s proactive approach to collaboration and education,” Mayor George Bray said. “By sharing knowledge and inviting other cities to participate, we’re improving safety in Paducah and strengthening partnerships across West Kentucky.”

The Regional Code Workshops are held quarterly in Paducah and surrounding cities, bringing building officials, contractors and engineers together to review code updates, exchange best practices and coordinate regional safety goals.

Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention Greg Cherry said clear communication is critical to helping communities grow and ensuring consistent code enforcement.

“By working with our regional partners, the Regional Code Meetings help us build safer communities,” Cherry said. “The Code Explanation Initiative allows us to clarify complex regulations before they become issues in the field. It’s prevention through education.”

The first Code Explanation email, sent this week, addressed when permits are required for interior wall changes and clarified guidance on electrical connections and disconnections.

Professional engineer Kelly B. Gardner of Gardner Engineering & Consulting PLLC praised the initiative, calling it a strong example of communication and support for the design and construction community.

The City of Paducah also hosted this week’s Regional Code Workshop at CFSB on the city’s south side. More than 30 regional officials attended the session, which included presentations on foreclosure procedures, community health partnerships and legal guidance on Fourth Amendment considerations and demolition statutes.

Hopkinsville will host the next Regional Code Workshop in March 2026.
