VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — The Vienna High School Empowered Eagles are participating in Homeless Awareness Month, using student-led initiatives to highlight the issue and encourage community support.
The Empowered Eagles, an all-girls leadership club sponsored by ALOP instructor Brandi Hammond, placed purple signs around campus — the national color of homeless awareness — and many members wore purple to show support.
“Our students wanted to do something meaningful to shine a light on these issues,” Hammond said. “They have shown so much compassion and teamwork by taking the initiative to raise awareness and inspire others to give back.”
Principal John Giffin praised the group for its leadership efforts.
“We are so proud of these young women for using their voices and actions to make a difference,” Giffin said. “They are learning how to serve their community while building confidence and compassion along the way.”
The Empowered Eagles are also collecting canned food and hygiene products throughout the month. Donations will benefit individuals and families in need and may be dropped off with Hammond at Vienna High School.
