National gas prices fall below $3 for first time since 2021

MISSOURI, (KBSI) — The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has fallen below $3 for the first time in four years, according to AAA. The national average has held at $2.99 since December 2, marking the lowest price point since May 2021.

AAA Missouri reports the statewide average is $2.64 per gallon, five cents lower than a week ago and six cents lower than this time last year. Among major metro areas surveyed, St. Louis drivers are paying the most at $2.75, while motorists in Joplin are paying the least at $2.38 per gallon.

AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said lower demand, the switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline and crude oil prices hovering near annual lows are contributing to the decline.

“Sluggish demand, cheaper-to-produce winter-blend gasoline, and crude oil prices near year lows are the main driving factors behind falling gas prices,” Chabarria said. “Barring any major industry disruptions, drivers can expect gas prices to remain in check for the year-end holiday travel season.”

The last time Missouri’s statewide average was at or below the current price of $2.64 was in January 2024.

Gas prices were current at press time based on market data posted at 3:41 a.m.
