VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — The Vienna High School cheerleading team earned a runner-up finish at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association state championships, marking the highest placement in school history.

The Eagles placed second among 28 teams at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association Championships, held Jan. 10 at the Bank of Springfield Center.

“The ladies’ outstanding showing reflects months of hard work, discipline and dedication,” Superintendent Joshua Stafford said. “Competing against top programs from across Illinois, the team represented Vienna with pride and excellence.”

Cheer coach Staci Shafer praised the team’s effort and unity throughout the season.

“We are extremely proud of this team and the work they’ve put in all seasons,” Shafer said. “Their commitment, resilience and belief in one another truly showed on the mat.”

The ICCA championships, now in their 41st year, are the longest-running cheerleading championships in Illinois.

The team will next prepare for IHSA cheer sectionals on Jan. 31 at Edwardsville High School. A top five finish would advance Vienna to the IHSA State Cheer Competition on Feb. 6–7 at Grossinger Motors Arena. The last time a Vienna High School cheer team qualified for the IHSA state series was in 2005.
