CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — City of Cape Girardeau said major repairs are continuing on South Sprigg Street between Route 74 and the Southern Expressway.
City officials said Fronabarger Concreters is leading the project, which includes removing and replacing curbs, gutters and sidewalks, replacing deteriorated concrete street panels, and completing mill-and-overlay work to create a new driving surface. Crews are also replacing a 104-year-old water main along the project corridor, along with making necessary sewer repairs, to reduce the need for future pavement cuts related to utility work.
The city said South Sprigg Street now has a new surface from the Southern Expressway to Linden Street, with active construction continuing northward.
Officials said the project, along with recent work on Lexington Avenue and Cape Rock Drive, is funded through the city’s Transportation Trust Fund sales tax. The half-cent tax, first approved by voters in 1995, provides most of the city’s street maintenance funding and supports all major street renovations. Voters review completed and proposed projects and decide every five years whether to renew the tax.
